Was it God’s will for Judas to betray Jesus?  If it was, then couldn’t you say that God willingly sacrificed a man to fulfill scripture?  What would you have told Judas if he had come to you for counsel? If you tell him not to betray Jesus are you thwarting the will of God for Jesus to go to the cross? Or on the other hand, if you tell Judas to betray Jesus, are you counseling him to sin?

The answers to these questions can only be resolved when you understand the two concepts of the will of God.  In scripture the words translated in English as “will” have two distinct concepts.  The first I will term the “Unalterable” will and the second, the “Desired” will of God.

The “Unalterable” will is the intentional action of God that no man can stop.  For example; it was God’s sovereign will for Jesus to be crucified and die for the sin of all mankind, and then to be raised from the dead on the third day.  No man had the power to alter that plan.

The “Desired” will of God, however, can be altered by man.  For example; the Bible says that God is not willing that any man should perish but that all should come to repentance. (2 Peter 3:9)  Yet, we observe that not all men are saved.

God’s desires are always consistent with His nature and character.  But as I wrote in last week’s blog, God has given man the right and responsibility to choose his own destiny.

So, could Judas have made a different decision?  Absolutely!  We can never know the motivations of Judas, but we do know that God does not want any to perish.  If Judas had not betrayed Jesus, the prophetic scripture that foretold the betrayal would still have been fulfilled.  Satan would simply have found another man to carry out the deed.

There is so much more to understand about the unalterable and desired will of God.  If you have struggled with questions regarding why “God allowed” certain events to take place in your life and the lives of your loved ones, you will definitely want to get a copy of my book, If God is in Control, Then Why?
