James 1:14-16

The Truth Delivers From Sin

Transcript

James 1:14-16 but each one is tempted when he is carried away and enticed by his own lust and then when lust is conceived it gives birth to sin and when sin is accomplished it brings forth death do not be deceived my beloved brethren so here James is explaining to us exactly how temptation does come many people think that God tempts them and we just read in the verses before in verse 13 no, God doesn’t tempt anyone God doesn’t put you in a place of temptation how does temptation come? it says each one is tempted when he is carried away and enticed by his own lust and I don’t like that word lust as much in translation it’s actually a different word it’s the word epithumia in Greek which doesn’t mean lust or sexual attraction it means a very powerful powerful compelling emotion so what carries us away? a very powerful powerful compelling emotion how are we tempted? we’re tempted when a lie in the depths of our heart produces a powerful compelling emotion that says if you would just do this you would feel better if you would go get drunk you would feel better if you would look at pornography you would feel better if you would just punch that guy in the mouth because he insulted you you would feel a lot better this is a powerful powerful emotion epithumia and it says that what happens is that we are enticed by this powerful emotion on the inside and carried away and it’s something that doesn’t make any logical sense I heard one fellow say it’s like when a fish swimming in the water who is hungry sees a little piece of metal with a hook attached to it he lunges for it and bites on it and goes to his death the fisherman catches him why would a fish bite on a hook with a little piece of metal flashing in the water? very simple reason he believes a lie the fish believes that little flashy piece of metal is food and he lunges for it because a powerful compelling desire of hunger compels him to reach out after that to satisfy his own desire and it leads to his death that’s a very good example of exactly what James is talking about we’re lead astray by a powerful desire within us that we believe can only be satisfied not by God but by sex, or by food or by alcohol, or by money or by power or some other kind of thing that we’re being tempted to so we’re carried away by that and then it says when this epithumia this powerful emotion has conceived how does it conceive? when it connects with my will or the fish’s will and it lunges and bites on the hook it conceives or what happens here when the thought the powerful emotion the lie deep within connects with my will and I make a choice to fulfill it then what happens it gives birth to sin why is it sin? because it’s fulfilling a deep desire that’s within me outside of God how is that thing supposed to be fulfilled? by coming to God and letting him meet that need sin is conceived whenever we really in idolatry don’t believe that God will meet our needs if I don’t believe that God will meet all my needs will take care of me then my powerful emotion on the inside compels me to look to something or someone outside of God things I mentioned people look to food to sex, to power, to money to new things to relationships to try to do what only God can do which is to satisfy it gives birth to sin and then it says when sin is accomplished it brings forth death just like the fish is caught by the hook and pulled out of the water to its death, didn’t realize that it starts with a deep compelling lie on the inside the lie is this thing will meet my need I need this and looking to something outside of God to meet my need is how temptation occurs and that’s exactly what James is explaining to us how do you overcome that? How do you defeat that? when that first temptation comes and the lie rises up from deep in your heart I need this and it will meet my need immediately run to God and ask for truth God is that the truth remember Yeshua said in John 8:32 you’ll know the truth and the truth will set you free that’s when it comes to your heart so you ask the question Father do I need food? do I need alcohol? do I need to look at this pornography? do I need money? this thing that I want to look to that’s outside of you to meet a need God do I really need that? and you’ll hear the voice of God and God will expose the lie on the inside and remove that thing it’s broken when you die to yourself and you say God I’m going to make a choice to trust you to meet my need and not look to this idolatrous thing that is tempting me that’s pulling on me and Lord would you please expose the lie deep in my heart that compels me to look to those things and He will and He’ll expose the truth and the truth will set you free so let that happen today when temptation comes run to God don’t trust in things other than God to meet your needs God bless you
