Romans 8:6-8

The Mind Set on the Spirit is Life and Peace

Transcript

Romans 8:6-8 for the mind set on the flesh is death but the mind set on the spirit is life and peace because the mind set on the flesh is hostile toward God for it does not subject itself to the law of God for it is not even able to do so and those who are in the flesh cannot please God we see here a model that Paul sets up for us in Romans 8 of a conflict between the flesh and the spirit these two in conflict with one another fighting one another what are they both fighting for? for the capture of your soul which is your mind, will and emotions when we read that word flesh I don’t believe it’s actually talking about your physical body your physical body’s not evil it’s not the bad thing what it’s talking about is the remnant of sin that abides inside every one of us when you’re born again your spirit is instantly changed filled with the life of Yeshua the Messiah but yet there’s a remnant of sin that abides in your flesh and the essence of that is self preservation, selfishness so over here in the flesh is a motive to preserve self to do what ever you need to do to meet your own goals to meet your own needs to be valuable and important in your own right and that’s the motive of the flesh over here is the spirit your human spirit which when you’re born again when you’ve entered into covenant with the Lord is filled with the Holy Spirit and God showed me one time almost like 3 little compartments here’s a compartment of the spirit here’s a compartment of the flesh and in between is a compartment of the soul which is your mind, will and emotions and there’s a battle taking place between the spirit that wants to capture your soul and the flesh that wants to capture your soul and the amazing thing that Paul tells us here in verse 7 he says the mind set on the flesh I would say it this way that’s like when the door is open between the flesh and your mind so the impulse of selfishness the impulse of sin is coming from the flesh capturing your mind it says the mind captured by the flesh or the mind set on the flesh is hostile toward God I looked up that word hostile and in the Greek it means deep seeded enmity or hatred that’s just an amazing thing many people think no, no left unto myself I’m a nice person NO left unto yourself the essence of what’s in your flesh is deep seeded hatred and enmity against God and so here’s this motive coming from the flesh of selfishness and the spirit and they fight with one another and whichever one captures your soul that’s what Paul is talking about the mind set on the spirit versus the mind set on the flesh I remember a very practical example when I first came into relationship and covenant with the LORD the people around me told me they said you know people that love God they need to feed their spirit and feed their mind and so the way you do that is on the word of God by prayer and reading the word meditating on the word in a time when real believers do this is early in the morning so I thought, Praise God I want to be a real believer I’m going to get up early tomorrow morning I’m going to read the word and pray so you know what happened? my spirit and my soul got together and made an agreement the night before we’re going to get up early in the morning and read the word and pray so the alarm went off early the next morning and you know what the battle started what battle? between my flesh and my spirit because my spirit was excited when the alarm went off Hallelujah we’re going to get up and read the word and pray and you know what my flesh said no we’re not we’re going to stay in bed and sleep and a battle started for the capture of my soul mind, will, and emotions and you know what usually falls first? your emotions so your emotions go ahhh I’m tired I’ll start reading the word tomorrow and then the next thing your mind begins to rationalize why that’s a good idea and then ultimately when your will is captured your mind is now set on the flesh so this deep seeded hatred toward God is fighting against the Spirit of God and your spirit and so it’s like you know sleep pray sleep, pray and one of them eventually wins if the flesh wins your mind is set on the flesh you roll over and go back to sleep or if your mind is set on the spirit and the spirit wins you kick your feet over the side of the bed you go brush your teeth you get your Bible you go out in the front room sit down in the big chair and then fall asleep you might have had the same experience I did no, I began to get excited about reading the word and praying but I recognized this battle that takes place that Paul is talking about here and he says that your flesh is not even able to please God those who are in the flesh cannot please God how is it that you shut down the flesh? you can never shut down the flesh by trying the way that it happens is when you yield to the spirit you get the door to the spirt open the door to the flesh automatically closes and your mind is set on the spirit that happens the more you exercise the muscle of your spirit it’s just like a muscle the more you exercise the muscle of the spirit the weaker the flesh becomes and your mind is set on the spirit more and more and more this is exciting to understand that that there’s a battle that takes place but that battle is completly winnable as you yield to the spirit so I encourage you today just allow your mind to be set on the spirit ask God, God what is it that you want to open me to in the spirit today I want to grab hold of your word I want to meditate on your word I want to walk with you in my life in the spirit today and I pray that God’s grace will be upon you to walk in the spirit today in the mighty name of Yeshua Amen
