Matthew 12:8-16

Lord of the Sabbath

Matthew 12:8-16 for the son of man is LORD of the Sabbath departing from there He went into their synagogue and a man was there whose hand was withered and they questioned Jesus, asking is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath so that they might accuse Him and He said to them what man is there among you who has a sheep and if it falls into a pit on the Sabbath he will not take hold of it and lift it out how much more valuable then is a man than a sheep so then it is lawful to do good on the Sabbath then He said to the man stretch out your hand he stretched it out and it was restored to normal like the other but the Pharisees went out and conspired against Him as to how they might destroy HIm but Jesus aware of this withdrew from there many followed Him and He healed them all and warned them not to tell who He was we’re talking here again about Shabbat which is the Hebrew word for Sabbath and its very interesting that Yeshua was challenged by the Pharisees to keep the religious rules as they understood them and it’s very interesting we still encounter lots of people today to whom religious rules are more important than people and really the point of what we just read that Yeshua is making is that the Sabbath was made for man not man for the Sabbath the purpose of Shabbat the purpose of the Sabbath is that we might have rest time that we might live a lifestyle of meekness but it’s not to be some religious edict or rule that is more important than people and Yeshua said even if a sheep falls into a ditch a man would lift it out how much more so can we help a man on the Sabbath could we heal a man on the Sabbath could we bless somebody on Shabbat and the point here we see the heart of God coming out through Yeshua God is far more concerned about people than He is about rules now I’m not saying that we’re to violate all kinds of things in Torah and we’re to walk in all kinds of wickedness and unrighteousness and that’s ok with God no I’m not saying that at all of course we’re to keep the Sabbath we’re to honor Shabbat this is what the scripture says over and over Yeshua Himself honored Shabbat but He was explaining here that what we need to do is have God’s heart in Shabbat that the purpose of Shabbat is for man for rest to receive from the spirit of God to bless other people if there’s somebody that needs healing of course we can do that on Shabbat and that’s the critical thing to understand do you take a rest? do you honor the Shabbat? you know we need to do that but do you make that such a rule to where you legalistically apply it? or maybe there are other rules in your life that God is bringing to your mind right now where you’ve made rules more important than your own children when my children were young many times the LORD showed me you’re telling them that which is correct but the tone of voice you’re using and the way that you’re treating them is imparting a relational message that your rules are more important than that son is and you’re wounding him and hurting your son you’re doing exactly what these pharisees were doing so the question today is is there someone in your life that you’re applying rules to with no concern for their heart that’s the message here so let’s pray Father would you just show me is there anyone in my life that I’ve been wounding with your word even taking your word and cutting someone to shreds because I’ve got a greater concern for my rules my interpretation of rules than I do for that person and Father I pray that you’d speak to each one of us that we might change that and make people more important in the name of Yeshua I want to just say to you again the little phrase God gave me some time ago which is today as you go through your life love God with all your heart bless people around you and you will make a difference
