I John 1:15-17

Conquering Lust, Greed, and Pride

1 John 2:15-17 do not love the world nor the things in the world if anyone loves the world the love of the Father is not in him for all that is in the world the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the boastful pride of life is not from the Father but is from the world the world is passing away and also its lusts but the one who does the will of God lives forever so we’re talking about these 3 key temptations 3 key attacks of the enemy the lust of the flesh the lust of the eye and the pride of life we could define these really as 3 simple things the lust of the flesh is normally manifested through sexual lust it’s lust greed is the second one pride is the third one it’s not trusting God to meet my needs because I don’t believe God is going to meet my needs I will meet my own needs because I don’t believe God will raise me up into the place of authority I should be and because I don’t believe I’m valuable in the sight of other people I’ll make myself valuable that’s pride or God isn’t going to meet my sexual needs in legitimate ways so I will do what I need to do to meet my own sexual needs through pornography or fornication or adultery or some way that is sin that’s me meeting my own needs and then of course the lust of the eye is greed I want more I want money I want to be rich I want to be like people who have lots of money I want to have what they have that’s greed these are 3 things that pretty much nobody is exempt from these afflict everybody how do you conquer these things the primary way that many people try to overcome this is through religion religion is not relationship with God religion is man constructed rules one way that people try to deal with lust greed and pride is through rules or actually some people have taken a vow to try to overcome that if you have a problem with lust you take a vow of celibacy if I’m celibate surely I’m not going to have a problem with sex if I want to deal with greed I take a vow of poverty if I don’t have any money or anything then there’s no way that I can be afflicted with greed and then the third one I take a vow of obedience to another man’s will give up my will entirely then I can’t be in pride just think about it how does that work out for many many people the fact of the matter is you can’t control these things by trying to manage the externals many times within certain churches there’s a big problem with immorality sexual immorality among people who have actually taken a vow of celibacy problem with greed among people who have taken a vow of poverty problem with pride among people who have taken a vow of obedience so external vows doesn’t deal with this do you know how to deal with these things by functioning in the opposite spirit what does that mean the answer to lust is not abstinence from any kind of sexual relationship sexual relationship within the context of marriage is holy pure right it’s a good thing it needs to be managed appropriately so the answer to the lust is purity the answer to greed is generosity the answer to pride is humility these are parts of the fruit of the spirit things that God has called us to to deal with greed with generosity so that’s how you break the power of that what some people do who are trying to go the religious route when they fail and inevitably you will fail because you don’t have power to overcome sin in your flesh then people do one of a couple things one thing people do is they play the grace card they say well God’s grace forgives me and makes it ok and I’ll just live in a lifestyle of fornication I’ll live in a lifestyle of homosexuality I’ll live in a lifestyle of greed I’ll live in a lifestyle of pride and I’ll just let that be ok and grace covers that no, grace is not God’s permission to do wrong Grace is God’s empowerment to do right what some other people do is they just go into hiding they hide the sin that doesn’t work in their life they hide the lust they hide the pride they hide the greed and continue to function within the congregation and then a third thing that people do they just check out they give up and they go I’m not going to go to church anymore I’m not going to be a part of a congregation anymore because I get too much condemnation I can’t live this life the answer is opening your heart to the spirit of God letting Him deal with that functioning in the opposite spirit by the spirit of God not trying to control these things but letting God deal with what’s in your heart I just want to pray for you today that if you have an issue with one of those things that God will show you how to walk in the opposite spirit Father I pray for everyone of us that today you would give us opportunities to walk in humility to walk in generosity I just feel the anointing of God on that God will bring people across your path today where there’s an opportunity for you to be generous with someone and it will be obvious I believe it will be a divine apointment where God will open a door for you to be generous with someone Father I pray that for each of us and Father for us to have an opportunity to walk in purity maybe there’s a temptation in some area of lust but Father I thank you for character that you develop within each one of us that gives us the ability to say yes to you in such a strong way that it says no to lust and Father I pray that for each one of us in the mighty name of Yeshua Amen
