Amos 5:18-19

The Lion, Bear and Serpent

Amos 5:18-19 alas you who are longing for the day of the LORD for what purpose will the day of the LORD be to you it will be darkness and not light as when a man flees from a lion and a bear meets him or goes home and leans his hand against the wall and a snake bites him years ago God gave me that scripture and showed me something that I hadn’t understood about my own life lions and bears and snakes are what’s being talked about here and what I discovered lions and bears are external lions and bears are the things that are out there the serpent is indicative of what’s in your own heart many times in scripture the wall when the Bible talks about a wall it’s actually talking about the heart of man so the wall is your heart and what I discovered was this when you think that the main problem in your life is someone or something out there usually you’re deceived the picture that we have here in this scripture Amos 5:19 a man goes out and meets a lion outside confronts the lion maybe kills him and overcomes him walks a little farther and meets a bear kills him overcomes him and goes home relaxes in his own home and you’ve got to think of like a middle eastern home where there are stones you know a wall made of stones not like a wall board today that we have in modern homes and he leans his hand back against the wall and a snake, a serpent is hiding in the cracks of the wall comes out and bites him and he perishes from the poison that’s in his own home here’s the key whenever you think that your problem is out there your wife, your husband your boss, your pastor the government, money your job some influence outside that thought is the very problem that’s the serpent you know for seven years first seven years of my marriage I thought that Jan was the one with problems she would be unhappy and she would cry after seven years realized why because I was draining her value and conveying to her that she wasn’t loved and valuable although I didn’t know that but that would hurt anyone but for seven years I didn’t realize I was part of the problem I just thought oh she has a problem she needs to get some counseling or something that’s the serpent that’s the lie you think the problem is your spouse you think the problem is your parents you think the problem is your boss you think the problem is some other person at work no the problem is what’s on the inside that’s the serpent so when you think that your problems are just external and the enemy keeps us focused on all the external problems you know the things that are outside, at work the money, the boss the other people that cause us problems no the real problem is right inside here it’s the serpent in your own heart so when your blaming external circumstances or external persons that is the deception and here’s a key do you know when you change on the inside wonder of wonders everything on the outside begins to change the lions and the bears go away when you deal with the serpent in your own heart so let’s just ask God, let’s pray Father would you show me today what’s the serpent in my heart what is the thinking process that causes me to blame other people to blame circumstances to blame everything outside to think that my husband is the problem my wife is the problem my boss is the problem LORD would you expose that and God would you show me what really is going on in my heart Father that I might repent of pride repent of trust in self repent of bitterness toward others repent of blaming other people that I might walk free and Father I pray that you’d expose the serpent in our hearts today that you’d free us from that in the mighty name of Yeshua Amen
