Winning Your Spiritual Battles

Transcript

2 Corinthians 10:3-5 for though we walk in the flesh we do not war according to the flesh for the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but divinely powerful for the destruction of fortresses we’re destroying speculations and every lofty thing raised up against the knowledge of God and we are taking every thought to the obedience of Christ we’re talking today about winning spiritual battles most spiritual battles aren’t out there they’re right here right in your mind and in your emotions and how do we fight those battles Paul tells us here our battle is not in the flesh we don’t use fleshly weapons but the most powerful weapon that we have is defeating deception identifying the deception the enemy’s power is in deceiving us and we don’t realize it so he fills our minds and our hearts with lies and we tend to believe those lies it’s amazing the foolish things we believe many many years ago I was doing some volunteer counseling at a church I met with a couple on I think a Wednesday or Thursday and ministered to them some and I was to have another appointment with them the next week do you know that on Sunday the man had found my home phone number of the couple that I had ministered to called me up and he was very angry he said you’ve destroyed my marriage I’m never letting you see my wife again and you’re a horrible couselor how can you even call yourself a Christian and I apologized I felt terrible and I thought you know what I probably shouldn’t even be counseling I’m not called to this I’m just volunteering anyway who needs this I’m going to quit I went in for my appointment with a woman named Jean who was my supervisor at that time in that church shared the experience with her and I said you know I think I’m probably no good at this I probably need to quit and she said a very interesting thing she said so your entire calling has changed since last week and who you are has changed last week you were called to this you were anointed to do it and this week you’re not what changed and I said well you know this man told me I was a complete failure and destroyed his marriage and she said so what he said supersedes what God said so everything God called you to and said before has changed and I realized oh my goodness I made the words of that man more powerful and allowed that man to determine my calling and my purpose rather than asking God when I asked the LORD He said no my calling on your life hasn’t changed nothing has changed and you need to repent of idolatry you were trusting in the words of a man I did then I had my appointment with that man he was going to come in again and strangely enough he brought his wife with him I said so….. he said could I talk to you privately for just a moment and I was thinking why is his wife here he said I’d never see her again we went in a room and he said you know I’ve battled with alcoholism and I had quit for a number of months he said I started drinking again this last weekend my wife caught me we had a huge argument she left and it was while I was drunk I decided to call you and blame you for all the problems I had in my life it wasn’t your fault please forgive me you did a wonderful job you’re the only one that has given us any help would you please consider ministering to us again and forgive me for all the things I said of course I did and continued to minister to them and I thought that’s the most amazing thing I almost let a man in a drunken rage change my whole calling change my destiny because I believed him instead of going to the LORD and saying what’s the truth and I realized the weapons of our warfare are not carnal the enemy sows deception and lies into our hearts and then we tend to believe what he says instead of realizing no no no I need to go ask God the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh we take thoughts captive to the obedience of the LORD what does that mean that means when I have a thought like that or something coming to me what I need to do is say LORD is this the truth am I worthless did I destroy that man’s marriage what do you say do you know what I realized I hadn’t even asked God I just believed what that man said for several days and let that take root in my heart discourage me and almost change my destiny thank God for a godly woman a woman of God in the church who was my supervisor who called me back to account and said what has God said and so today are you facing a battle are you facing discouragement are there things that you believe that are not from the LORD I encourage you today ask God God what do you say listen to what He says and take those thoughts captive to the obedience of the LORD so Father I pray for your grace for every one of us to do that today that we would use your weapons break the power of deception and walk in the truth that you have for us today in the mighty name of Yeshua Amen
