How to Handle Rebuke From a Friend

Transcript

2 Samuel 12:1-12 then the LORD sent Nathan to David and he came to him and said there were two men in one city the one rich and the other poor the rich man had a great many flocks and herds but the poor man had nothing except one little ewe lamb which he bought and nourished and it grew up together with him and his children it would eat of his bread and drink of his cup and lie in his bosom and it was like a daughter to him now a traveler came to the rich man and he was unwilling to take from his own flock or his own herd to prepare for the wayfarer who had come to him rather he took the poor man’s ewe lamb and prepared it for the man who had come to him then David’s anger burned greatly against the man and he said to Nathan as the LORD lives, surely the man who has done this deserves to die he must make restitution for the lamb fourfold because he did this thing and had no compassion Nathan then said to David you are the man thus says the LORD God of Israel it is I who anointed you king over Israel and it is I who delivered you from the hand of Saul I also gave you your master’s house and your master’s wives into your care and I gave you the house of Israel and Judah and if that had been too little I would have added to you many more things like these why have you despised the word of the LORD by doing evil in His sight you have struck down Uriah the Hittite with the sword have taken his wife to be your wife and have killed him with the sword of the sons of Ammon now therefore the sword shall never depart from your house because you have despised Me and have taken the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be your wife thus says the LORD behold I will raise up evil against you from your own household I will even take your wives before your eyes and give them to your companion and he will lie with your wives in broad daylight indeed you did it secretly but I will do this thing before all Israel and under the sun Whoah! how do you respond to a rebuke like that from a friend David was the King he could have killed Nathan for speaking like that it’s very interesting everybody wants justice until they are found to be the perpetrator of injustice isn’t that true everybody cries out for justice I want justice for this group and justice for that group everybody wants justice until you happen to be the one that’s unjust David said kill the man who’s done that and Nathan said you’re that man that’s amazing that Nathan was bold enough to say that to the king the king could have killed him but he knew the heart of David most people cover and lie when they’re discovered and when they’re rebuked David didn’t do that David responded in repentance and asked forgiveness probably that why David was called a man after God’s own heart because when he was called out on something he didn’t cover it he didn’t lie he repented he asked forgiveness there was a consequence unfortunately for his sin Nathan prophesied that what David did in secret would be done publicly and that’s exactly what happened we find that when people cover things and they try to lie about it it ultimately gets exposed anyway even in the most inconvenient time I heard somebody give this definition of humility and humiliation and you always have your choice when you’ve done wrong of humility or humiliation humility is a wise person acknowledging their true condition before God and a few trusted friends who can help humiliation is trying to cover what you’ve done wrong and being publicly exposed for all to see we all know ministers that have been in prominent places that have been exposed publicly some of them unfortunately chose humiliation instead of humility they could have been set free they could have had somebody minister to them and had their heart changed had their life changed in private had they chosen humility but many chose to try to cover to hide and to lie the result of that was humiliation being publicly exposed what am I saying I encourage you today don’t cover, don’t lie, don’t hide we’ve seen so many times in covenant marriage conferences where we’ve encouraged transparency among couples and many times either a husband or a wife will finally come clean and expose an adulterous affair sometimes many years in the past but it’s painful to the spouse you know what I’ve seen in virtually every case God heals, God restores God brings restoration I’m thinking of 2 or 3 instances right now in other countries of people that have walked through that and God has restored one of them is Elias and Chelo who are leaders in our ministry in Colombia today and God exposed adultery that had taken place that Chelo the wife had entered into many years before it was exposed she had hidden it all those years and they always had something between them but when it was exposed she confessed to her husband yes it was painful yes it was very hard for him to walk through they share their testimony openly which is why I can share it with you today they share it openly in many contexts of how they walked through that pain let God Heal them did what David did exposed, brought into light brought repentance and healing so I encourage you today walk in light don’t wait for Nathan to have to come and expose your sin and worse yet don’t wait for the enemy to expose it at a very inconvenient time like has happened for many prominent and public ministers walk in humility with God when somebody comes and rebukes you and it’s true don’t cover don’t lie don’t get angry with that person don’t resist do what David did repent, ask forgiveness and make it right
