You Are No Longer a Slave to Sin!

Transcript

Romans 6:1-7 What shall we say then are we to continue in sin so that grace may increase may it never be how shall we who died to sin still live in it or do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus have been baptized into His death therefore we’ve been buried with Him through baptism into death so that as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father so we too might walk in newness of life for if we have become united with Him in the likeness of His death certainly we shall also be in the likeness of His resurrection knowing this that our old self was crucified with Him in order that our body of sin might be done away with so that we would no longer be slaves to sin for he who has died is freed from sin that is awesome news you don’t have to be a slave to sin anymore you don’t have to be a slave to addictive bondages anymore you don’t have to be a slave to drugs to alcohol to smoking nicotine addiction pornography, overeating you don’t have to be a slave maybe I didn’t mention a particular thing that you’ve struggled with but this is exciting news it says you don’t have to be a slave to that anymore many times people continue to be slaves because they have a wrong definition of grace you know what some people think grace is God’s permission to do wrong God’s permission to continue in bondage that’s not God’s grace you know what grace actually is it’s God’s empowering presence exerting a divine influence upon your heart resulting in manifest change in your life or another simple way to say that grace is God’s empowerment to do right not His permission to do wrong this passage is incredibly powerful if you really get get what it’s saying it’s saying that if you will walk in the death to yourself let your flesh die what will happen is your spirit will rise up in resurrected life and will govern and manifest through your life I found two lies that many many people believe and two areas of truth that we need to embrace here’s the very first lie a lot of people are not willing to call their addictive bondage sin you know what some people say well you know it’s just a bad habit it’s just something I know I shouldn’t do they’re not willing to acknowledge this is sin an abomination before God something destructive something that makes God weep no, no, no my drinking, my drunkeness is not really sin it’s just a bad habit my overeating is not really sin it’s just a bad habit my smoking addiction is not sin it’s just something that’s not good my pornography addiction is not sin no, these things are sin so the first step is call it what it is don’t say an addictive bondage is just a bad habit or just something I shouldn’t do or whatever no anything that you trust in to bring peace to your soul when you’re out of peace other than Yeshua the prince of peace is idolatry anything you look to to bring comfort to yourself is idolatry God showed me that one time when I was eating food and eating food and eating food I was just bored feeling yucky one Saturday afternoon eating pizza, drinking soda pop and popcorn and icecream and the Holy Spirit said what are you doing? I said I’m eating He said why I said because I’m hungry and I heard the voice of the Holy spirit clear as a bell he said you’re not hungry you’re deceived you’re looking to food as a source of comfort today and you’re rejecting me and I realized you know what that’s true anything you look to as a source of comfort in your life other than Jesus Messiah is ultimately idolatry you’re looking to something else and in doing that you’re rejecting Him I reject your grace I reject your blood it’s not enough I heard a man Festo Kivengere in a conference way back in 1973 say if Jesus isn’t Lord of all Jesus isn’t Lord at all that really impacted me because I had a couple of areas in my life I was still struggling and having difficulty completely turning over to the LORD and I realized you know what Jesus isn’t LORD really in my life I still insist on embracing this bondage in my life the first lie is people don’t call it what it is they don’t call it sin they just call it a bad habit or something like that the second lie is people in their heart believe God’s grace really is not sufficient for me God’s empowerment is not enough to set me free from this I need this thing I need these cigarettes I need this pornography I need this food this alcohol whatever the addictive bondage is and the lie is I need that I won’t be ok without that I’m telling you that is a lie here’s the first area of truth verse 6 right here it says this knowing this our old self was crucified with Him in order that our body of sin might be done away with so we would no longer be slaves to sin here’s the truth you don’t have to be a slave anymore let me say it again you don’t have to be a slave to an addictive bondage anymore the body of sin was done away with in your spirit so you have to learn to break the identity with the flesh that has been addicted to that bondage and say no I’m a new creation that is not me that clings to that addictive bondage no I am set free I’m a new creation I’m going to identify with that spirit man or that spirit woman who is not addicted who is set free that’s who I am and I’m going to walk in the spirit I’m going to let my spirit rise up and govern my life I’m not going to continue to turn to the flesh over and over and over the first truth is the body of sin really was done away with and I don’t have to be a slave the lie is I have to be a slave I can’t break this the power of God isn’t strong enough that’s a lie the truth is God’s grace is strong enough to break that and has already set you free and the second truth is the blood of Yeshua is strong enough to overcome that bondage let the blood of Yeshua free you cleanse you how does it happen it happens through repenting asking forgiveness acknowledging sin for what it is not just say oh it’s not a good thing or it’s a bad habit or it’s something that I do that I know I shouldn’t do no, no, no this is sin it’s an abomination before you God forgive me and I acknowledge I don’t have power to get free I desperately need your grace and I thank you that your grace is available if you need to pray that prayer if God is speaking to you about an addictive bondage a habit something that’s in your life please don’t use this to judge or condemn other people don’t use this to judge or condemn yourself God doesn’t condemn anyone He loves you that’s why Yeshua died is to set you free but if you need to pray that would you just speak these words with me Father God I have been in bondage to an addiction and I acknowledge today it is sin I call it what it is I have allowed sin to operate in my life Father I repent I ask you to forgive me and LORD I acknowledge I don’t have power to deliver myself but you do today I receive your grace to set me free I choose to identify with who I am in the spirit and to break the identification with my flesh controlling my life I speak to my own spirit rise up and operate through my mind will and emotions I choose this day to let you be strong even though I am weak and to set me free Amen
