Philippians 3:13-14

Three Factors That Determine Your Success in Life

Philippians 3:13-14 Brethren, I do not regard myself as having laid hold of it yet. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and reaching forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. Paul is talking here about leaving the past and pressing on toward the goal of fulfilling the destiny and vision that God has for your life. In order to move forward from where you are, that is going to require change, and change is difficult for everybody.

I recently learned there are three things that are necessary in order for change to really take place in your life, like this year that you’re in now. How will this year be better than last year? How will you move closer to the Lord? How will your marriage be better if you’re married? How will your finances be better? How will your ministry be better? How will your physical health be better in this year? Every one of those things is dependent on three key things.

The first is vision. Do you know your life will never exceed your vision? If your vision is here, your life will not exceed it; your life will always never exceed, never go beyond your vision. So, the first thing to press on toward the goal of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus is vision. To get there, think about it in these different areas of life. What is my vision for physical health? What is my vision for my marriage, for my ministry, for my family, my children, my finances? All these areas.

The second thing that’s key in change is habits. I will have to have daily habits that will support the vision. If I don’t have habits that are things that I do daily that support the vision, I’ll never accomplish that vision. What I found is your emotions, your joy, primarily comes from the habits in your life. The deep intimacy with God has to come from daily habits. If you want to walk with the Lord and have a close intimate relationship with Him, you’re going to have to spend time with Him. Everybody knows if you want to lose weight or build strength, you’re going to have to have some habits that support that.

The third thing, first again in review, vision. Second thing is habits. The third is community. Get a community of like-minded people around you who stimulate you to greatness, people that motivate you to go forward. Some people only have maintenance friends in their life. What I mean by that is they don’t have anybody that challenges them to move forward. It’s not bad to have friends like that, but if all your friends are like that, that’s not good. We tend to either rise or fall to the level of our peers. So make sure that you have some people in your community that are out ahead of you, that are stimulating you to move on, to press on toward the goal of the call of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.

What’s most important is to understand and just think. I feel like during this time, what’s the greatest area of need in your life? Is it vision? Do you have a low vision? Some people have been wounded, some people have been knocked back so many times they quit, they just gave up. Their vision is to survive. Here’s what I want to tell you: dream again, set your vision high because God has an awesome destiny for you. God has something incredible that He wants to do for you. And habits are your need, vision, or is your need establishing better habits, or do you need to get a community of friends around you? Sometimes it’s time to find some new friends, sometimes it’s time to intentionally search out people who will motivate you, who will move you forward.

So what are you doing about changing in these areas of your life in this year, in this month, in this week? So here’s the word of the Lord I believe for today: press on toward the goal of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. God has an incredible destiny for you, and it’s time to press in these three areas: vision, habits, and community. So let’s pray.

Father, would you show each one of us today what is the greatest need we have to change: community, to establish some new habits, or to increase our vision? Father, what is it you’re saying to me, and Lord, we will do what you tell us to do. I encourage you: write down what God is sharing with you, what He’s saying to you. Evaluate it a week from now. Are you moving in that direction? Establish what God has called you to establish, and I believe God wants to fulfill an awesome destiny through you.

Remember today, as you go through life, love God with all your heart, bless the people around you, and you will make a difference. You know one last thing: be a friend who stimulates people around you. Not just have friends that motivate you, be a friend that pushes other people toward the goal of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus in their lives. God bless you.
