Matthew 19:3-12

Yeshuas Shocking Statement on Marriage

Matthew 19:3-12 some Pharisees came to Jesus testing Him and asking is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for any reason at all and He answered and said have you not read that He who created them from the beginning made them male and female and said, for this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife and the two shall become one flesh so they are no longer two but one flesh what therefore God has joined together let no man separate they said to Him Why then did Moses command to give her a certificate of divorce and send her away He said to them Because of your hardness of heart Moses permitted you to divorce your wives but from the beginning it has not been this way and I say to you whoever divorces his wife except for immorality and marries another woman commits adultery the disciples said to Him if the relationship of the man with his wife is like this it is better not to marry but He said to them not all men can accept this statement but only those to whom it has been given for there are eunuchs who were born that way from their mother’s womb and there are eunuchs who were made eunuchs by men and there are also eunuchs who made themselves eunuchs for the sake of the kingdom of heaven He who is able to accept this let him accept it so this is a very very interesting statement difficult in our society but very clear what Yeshua is saying here about marriage it’s interesting because the Pharisees ask Him a question, and they say is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for any reason at all why did he say for any reason at all and the answer is because there was a dispute between the Pharisees and the Sadducees and the Sadducees had all kinds of reasons in that day that they believed a man could divorce actually according to the Sadducees if a woman burned dinner it was lawful for a man to divorce her if a woman went about in the street with her hair undone her husband could divorce her if she actually was talking in the house so loud that the neighbors could hear he could divorce her that was the Sadducees idea the Pharisees had just a very strict idea about perhaps sexual immorality adultery something like that so they ask Yeshua the question hoping he will side with them and Yeshua did what He typically does He didn’t side with either of them He answers with a question as He typically did have you not read who created them from the beginning made them male and female He doesn’t even talk about immorality in the beginning He just goes right back to the beginning to Genesis and He says God’s intention was that there would be one man and one woman they would come together in a covenant of marriage that is life long and that was God’s plan for them they say Yeah but why did Moses say it was OK to divorce why did he permit divorce and Yeshua said because of your hardness of heart I’ve heard some people actually teach well if your heart is hard Jesus said it was OK to divorce that is not at all what is being said here it would be like saying if a man steals another man’s television should he pay back replacement value or used value and Yeshua looks at them and says what a silly question a man shouldn’t steal another man’s television at all it’s wrong for him to steal yeah, yeah, but the law of the State of Colorado where we live says that he should pay back replacement value and Yeshua says ok yes the reason we have a law is because people’s hearts are so hard hearted they actually do what they are not supposed to do He again says yes because of hardness of heart that’s why a law was created for that then He says a very interesting thing but I say to you, in verse 9 whoever divorces his wife except for porneia this is the word porneia it’s not moichea it’s not talking about adultery after marriage this is talking about immorality that would occur before marriage such as what Joseph thought remember Joseph and Mary the parents of Yeshua Joseph thought Mary had committed immorality or porneia because she was found to be pregnant and they were only engaged and he knew that he was not the father so his idea was to divorce her and not marry her until the angel came and told him no you don’t need to do that what’s very interesting is many people have thought that this is saying except for adultery no, this has nothing to do with adultery I believe if this was talking about adultery the word for adultery moichea would have been used and in addition to that in those days what was the commonly known remedy for a woman or a man who had committed adultery and the answer is to be stoned to death it wasn’t always applied but everybody knew that was the penalty for adultery so if your wife commits adultery do you need to divorce her the answer is of course not you don’t need to divorce a corpse so Yeshua is not talking anything about that and he says but whoever divorces his wife unless she has committed fornication which is something that happens before the wedding ceremony but if a man divorces his wife not in that case and he marries another woman what he has done is committed adultery and of course this is exactly the same as He said in Luke 16:18 in Mark 10 in Matthew 5:31-32 so it’s consistent Yeshua is just saying the same thing why does he say it because marriage is a covenant and covenants are only terminated by death and it’s interesting even His disciples are shocked when Yeshua says this and they say in verse 10 well if the relationship of a man to to wife is like this maybe it’s better not to marry and He says you guys are getting it, yes this is a serious serious thing you need to consider that marriage is a covenant terminated only by death and then He goes on to say in verse 11 not all men can accept this statement but only those to whom it has been given boy I’ve noticed that a lot of people have difficulty particularly in our current divorce and remarriage culture where serial monogamy is very very common even in the church it has become acceptable and common and Yeshua said not everybody is going to be able to accept this and then he talks about people that have chosen to remain single and celibate He uses the word eunuch which is talking about somebody single and celibate and He says some were born this way some were made this way by others to serve in the King’s court for example there were people who were castrated made eunuchs and they served in the King’s court with his Harem and then others who have chosen to remain eunuchs for the sake of the Kingdom of God what He is saying is there are some people who have for example had a spouse abandon them and for the sake of the Kingdom of God have chosen to remain single and celibate for the sake of the Kingdom this is a powerful powerful scripture on covenant in marriage I just believe that our culture is so devoid of the understanding of covenant this is critical for us to understand and put back in place what Yeshua is saying here that marriage is a covenant what God has put together let not man separate I think there’s actually a case to be made that what it really says in Greek is what God has joined together man cannot separate in other words it’s not possible to do not don’t do it it’s just you can’t so this is a powerful scripture what I’d like to do today is just pray for marriages if you’re married I’d like to pray for the hedge of covenant to just be put back around your marriage and for you to walk in that covenant until death do us part like we say in our marriage vows so Father I pray for every person today who’s married Father I pray that today you would put the protective hedge of covenant back around our marriages Father we acknowledge and we choose today marriage is a covenant it’s a representative picture prophetic picture on this earth of how Yeshua treats His bride Father would you put your protective hedge of covenant back around every marriage today I thank you for doing that in the mighty name of Yeshua Amen
