Ephesians 5:22-27 wives submit to your own husbands as to the Lord for the husband is the head of the wife as also Christ is the head of the church and He is the Savior of the body therefore just as the church is subject to Christ so let the wives be to their own husbands in everything Husbands, love your wives just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her that He might sanctify and cleanse her with the washing of water by the word that He might present her to Himself a glorious church not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing but that she should be holy and without blemish so husbands ought to love their own wives as their own bodies he who loves his wife loves himself marriage really is a team sport have you ever seen a team where each person is out for himself can you imagine a basketball team or a soccer team that was full of superstars but every superstar wanted to score every superstar refused to pass the ball to anybody else always kept it, wanted to make the goals himself and as a result of that there was no teamwork that team would lose absolutely every single game a mediocre team that’s learned to work together as a team will always beat a team of superstars where everybody has to fight for himself I find many marriages that are exactly like that the husband’s fighting for his rights the wife is fighting for her rights there’s a war one against the other what Paul is saying here marriage is supposed to be a team as Jan and I have traveled around the world people have wanted to interview her and they’ve asked her what is the key, what’s the success to your marriage and she says teamwork God showed us that we’re to be a team, we work together we don’t fight against each other the reason I’m teaching on marriage is today happens to be our wedding anniversary we were married in 1977 you can figure it out it’s been quite a number of years we haven’t always had a simple, nice, easy, peaceful time we really struggled for the first 7 years and part of that was God working the selfishness out of each of us to learn to begin to function and operate as a team some people hate that word submission where the very first thing we read wives submit yourselves or be subject to your own husbands that’s not saying that the wife is lesser it’s just establishing like on a bus somebody’s got to drive you can’t have 5 people driving the bus that doesn’t mean that the wife may not be much more qualified in certain areas than the husband and if the husband is wise he would delegate those areas to his wife and she will operate for example I’ve seen some wives that are much more detail oriented much better at finances and it’s much better for the wife to pay the bills to reconcile the accounts but the husband ultimately remains in authority over the family can you imagine what would happen if you were flying on an airliner and coming into an airport on final decent the cockpit door flies open and the co pilot and the captain are engaged in a fist fight over who gets to land the plane how would that make you feel as a passenger my goodness you’d say would somebody just take fire extinguisher and knock one of them out so that the other one can land the plane I think that’s the way it is in many families children feel that way would somebody just get my parents to settle this thing let one of them drive and that’s what Paul is talking about and it’s just like in an airliner one is designated to land the plane or to take off the plane it doesn’t mean that that person is a better person that’s just the designated person in authority over the airplane but in reality as a cockpit crew the Captain and co pilot work together to accomplish the goal of safely delivering the passengers to their destination a marriage is exactly the same as that you are charged as a married couple with delivering your family the finances what God has put in your hands to steward to the destination that God has called you to so there are different gifts in marriage we want to release husbands and wives to flow and function in their gifts and Jan has totally different gifts from the ones that I do I allow her to function in her gifts she allows me to function in my gifts but marriage really is a team sport and when both people are mutually submitting to one another and they are working together as a team that’s where it’s the most fun thing in the world to be working with a team mate where you can accomplish and function the destiny and purpose to which God has called you here’s an amazing thing I see many couples that fight over money argue a lot over money Jan and I in all the decades we’ve bee married have never one time ever had one argument about money why is that? the reason is we both recognize money is just a tool that we use in our team to accomplish the purpose that God has called us to it’s not, that’s my money I want to use it this way no, no I want to use it that way we’ve never one time had that argument we’ve always realized money is a tool God gave us as a team to accomplish His purpose and I just want to pray for you today, if you’re married if you’re not married I pray that when you marry you will come into that team kind of revelation if you’re already married Father I pray today for each person each couple who’s married I pray for supernatural grace of unity to be poured out over every marriage today I pray that today something would shift in the spirit and a revelation would drop of what it means to be a team not to be fighting against one another not to be arguing with one another not to be fighting for my rights but to fight for our team and I pray today that there would be an anointing of team work that would come upon your marriage in the mighty name of Jesus Messiah Amen
